A horror-thriller film directed by Adam Robitel and stars Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Woll, Tyler Labine, Jay Ellis and Nik Dodani. The story follows of six people who are invited to complete a series of escape rooms only to found out that the consequences of falling to escape such rooms could potentially result in death.
The whole premise of the movie is like Saw but without the gory and bloody death scenes. The movie provides some suspense because some of its unique rooms are filled with these deadly traps. I also liked that it engages you to join to solve their clues for them to escape. It's like being with them inside those rooms. There is a story behind why these people were chosen to participate in these escape rooms. I also like that as they slowly discover the truth about these rooms and about the people that they are trapped with, the tension between them gets stronger. The performances from the casts were also good. I liked some of the character development from the movie. At first, you get annoyed by the attitude of some characters then an hour later, you're already cheering for them to escape the rooms. It's hard to choose which characters you want to survive because each one of them has some valid points and all of them has some tragic backstory. I didn't immediately buy about the whole story of it. There was some thought process before I started to accept that this is the story that they were really going to. I was hoping for a different direction for the story to go to cause I just didn't really like how they established that in the movie. I also have this issue about a particular scene during the first minutes of the film. I wished that they hadn't included that scene so early because it would have been much of a shocking factor if it was put at the end part.

OVERALL
ESCAPE ROOM is a good film that has an intriguing story that is potentially a franchise maker. It's thrilling and suspense and the whole story works fine but I think it still needs some tweaking. It's also a good change of pace because it provides a little breather for those audiences who are into this kind of films with some thought-provoking story but are not really a fan of the bloody and gory stuff. The first Saw movie, a very bloody and gory film, does have some deeper story to it and this movie is the substitute of that. The characters were good and the actor's performances were also solid. Let's see what the sequel will be all about and hoping for them to add more to the story just so it wouldn't feel repetitive much like what Saw film series has become.
