MOVIE PLOT

Happy Death Day 2U is the sequel to Happy Death Day released in 2017. The sequel follows right after the ending of its first movie and furthers the story about the origin of the time loop and possibly setting up a future sequels where Tree, who was the main protagonist of the first movie, got trapped in an another dimension and must relive different version of the same day and tries to return back to her original dimension.

REVIEW

The first movie was a surprise. I was unsure how could they set-up a sequel of it by not repeating the same idea that they have introduced from the first movie. Fast forward today, they have released a new sequel. Could it hold-up the same amount of thrills and enjoyable moment from the first movie?

This sequel is all about the origin of the first movie and they really explained more about the time loop and also introducing new elements to it. They introduced more characters and also retreading the same plot from the first movie. Though they have revisited the plot from the first movie, they have also changed some of the things from it. If you're planning to see this movie without watching the first film then you're gonna be in a hell of a confusion ride because there are mumbo-jumbo and scientific terms that they have introduced and you basically need to watch the first film first just so you quickly get the grasp of the second movie.

In terms of its tone, it drastically changed from being this horror, comedy and mystery into a scifi-comedy one. What made the first film a surprising one is though some of the scenes generated some of the funny sequences, at the same time it has this mystery and thrilling vibe to it. The secrecy surrounds the film really made the movie interesting to watch and it just so happens that all of the elements from the first movie really clicked well. I didn't feel any of that in this sequel. This sequel tends to lean more about the sci-fi element of it. There is still that mystery vibe involved to it but it was'nt just the same as the first one. There are still those funny scenes but it just feels like a repetition from the first movie.

OVERALL

HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U might not be as good as its predecessor but I'm also looking forward for its future stories. If they indeed are going to make a third movie of it then I would really want them to focus more with the sci-fi element to it and just completely ditched the mystery killer concept. It's been done before from its first and second movie and I just don't want them to retread the same storyline all over again. The movie is still enjoyable but I would say that the first movie was way better than this sequel. I would recommend it to anyone so long as you have watched the first movie.
