Hereditary is a supernatural horror film directed by Ari Aster as his directorial debut feature movie and stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Byrne. It tells about a story of Annie Graham played by Toni Collette with her family being haunted with mysterious and unfortunate circumstances right after the death of her grandmother. The opening scene of this movie immediately sends a very very creepy vibe. The tone, the music, and the colors compliment each other really well. The tone is so mysterious and so creepy that there is definitely something odd about this movie. The music is so haunting that it gave chills to every inch of my body and the color palette is not so bright but not so dim which I appreciate given emphasis to the mysteriousness of this film. This movie is nerve-wracking and so unsettling to watch. Now this movie is what I call a very good horror movie and I could enumerate many reasons why it is so good. First, I mentioned about the tone of it. It directly sends a very intriguing and creepy vibe that invites you and you couldn't resist but to continue watching it just to know what is going on around this movie. Second, the characters were so very well written. Each one of them really drives the storyline of the movie and every one of them were perfectly weaved into it. All of these characters really played their part that really shows how human emotions work against their character's decision. Third, what you normally see in a typical horror film that what we call "Jump-Scare", guess what, I can't recall that this movie has any and still it was so terrifying and scared the shit out of me. The thing about this movie is, even though that there is something that is so obvious behind the scene, you can still feel the scariness of it. No scary sounds, no scary demonic figures but just little things that is unexpecting that will really make you scared. Fourth, the storyline of this movie. It's one of the best storylines that I have ever heard for a horror film. It's unsettling, it's terrifying and up to now this kind of activity (I won't spill the name to avoid spoilers) may still exists and it just terrifies me thinking that I or my family could be on that position.

OVERALL

HEREDITARY is a frightening film from start to finish. I watched this movie all throughout with a very heavy feeling filled with anxiety, thrills, fear and terror. I don't even want to continue watching this movie because of how scary it is but I was truly hooked by its storyline and I just want to know the secrets and revelations of it. It's really not your typical horror film that is just filled with jump scares or prolong scenes. It's a very good substantial horror movie that has a rich storyline, complex characters, and a very creepy and scary vibe accompanied by perfect camera angles that intensify its disturbing atmosphere. One of the criteria that I mentioned for this rating that I would give for this movie is how deserving rewatchable the movie is. It is indeed deserving to be watched multiple viewings but I wouldn't want to watch this again cause this movie just freaking scared the bejesus out of me.
