Overlord is a war horror movie directed by Julius Avery and produced by J. J. Abrams. The plot follows of a group of American soldiers who are dropped behind enemy lines with mission is to infiltrate the Nazi bases and plant some bombs to blow it up and along the way their mission they have discovered some secret Nazi experiments being done on citizens who were taken forcefully by the Nazi soldiers. The plot of the movie is based on the story written by Billy Ray and stars Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russel, Mathilde Ollivier, John Magaro, Pilou Asbæk, and Iain De Caestecker.

The movie is like Saving Private Ryan meets Frankenstein. It starts with Ed Boyce (Jovan Adepo), a paratrooper who is about to be dropped from a plane behind enemy lines on an Operation Overlord during World War II. The intro of the film perfectly set-ups the mood of the film. You don't know for sure what you're getting into and I really like that the movie intrigues me so much about its plot. The film is chaotic since it's a war film and there are a lot of things that are happening in the background but it settles down once the group of soldiers goes into a mission of finding the Nazi-German base for them to bomb it. The second half of the film is where the interesting parts starting to unveil. Just like the characters from this movie, I was also really shocked to discover these shady secret experiments that are being done on these innocent people by the Nazis. As a war movie, this one was really good. There were a couple of scenes which reminded me some war scenes from Savings Private Ryan especially at the last part of it. The movie is partly horror and they really managed to combine two different genres. I like that this movie provides so many suspense and thrills even right from the start of it. You feel some suspense at the beginning of the film since you don't have any clue what the film is about but still, you're rooting for these characters to survive the war. Then the second half comes in the suspense greatly magnified once you get to know that there are this shady experiments being done and you know that every movie with secret experiments tends to end in a very bloody, gory and horrifying way. They set up the story so well that the flow of it just comes naturally and it didn't feel like it was forced or anything awkward. I also like that this movie puts on emphasis on such little details that also contributes so much to its story. For a low budgeted film, the actions sequences and the practical effects were done really well. All the characters from this movie really contributed to the overall storyline. Each of them has their own place on the story and I didn't see any stagnant or useless characters. Every minute from this movie keeps on building up the suspense and thrills and it really puts the audiences at the edge of their seat. The movie was really darn entertaining.

OVERALL
OVERLORD is an enjoyable and thrilling film that I enjoyed so much. All the pieces from this movie worked so well to me. I like the aspect of a war film combined with some horror genre on it. They managed to balanced out the two genres without sacrificing the other. The story is great and the characters were written so well. The movie is bloody and at times gory but not to the point that will make you sick. The movie was really a surprise and I do highly recommend this to everyone.
