It's a fantasy-adventure film written and directed by Joe Cornish (who also wrote the screenplay of "Ant-Man" and directed the hit sci-fi British film "Attack The Block") which plots follow of a kid named Alex Elliot who finds the famous legendary Arthur's sword "Excalibur" who then tasked to find the secret lair and defeat the evil enchantress Morgana from taking over the real world. The movie surrounds with a very young actors such as Louis Ashbourne Serkis, Dean Chaumoo, Tom Taylor, Rhianna Dorris and Angus Imrie and also features prominent names with the likes of Rebecca Ferguson (Mission Impossible:Rouge Nation and Fallout) and Patrick Stewart (Professor X from the X-Men Franchise).

Louis Ashbourne Serkis playing Alex Elliot. Louis is the son of the famous actor Andy Serkis.

The movie starts with an animation retelling the legend of Arthur and the conflict with him and his evil step-sister Morgana in her trying to take over the world. It's a very short animation and it provides a little bit background about the Arthur Legend and it is also the central story of the film. I like that part because the animation is really fluid and it is able to give you a short background for just a matter of seconds and at the same time be in awe of how beautiful the animation was done. The story of the film is kind of dark as it talks about demons and witchcraft but the overall tone of it is intended for kids so some parts of the film have been toned-down a bit to cater the young audiences. Much like with any other children movies out there, there has to be a bully who constantly annoys our young lead and I really like what they have done on that character. In a way, the movie addresses that some bullies can still be changed and they can still be turn out to be good. The movie is also shot beautifully. There were some scenic scenes included on the film and I also like the color palette of it. They also provide some sort of magical connection to these mysterious Stonehenge and they played a significant part of the story. The movie also invested in their visual effects as well. The effects were really done well and it was able to add more to its fantasy vibe of its story. I also like the central theme of the movie. The movie talks about marking your own path and not relying to your background. My online gripe of the film is its very lighter tone despite how dark its source material is. There's no real sense of threat and danger to our characters which you can see at the climax of the film.

OVERALL

THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING is a good movie intended for young audiences. I liked that the Arthurian Legend was able to blend in the modern era. The movie has some good visual effects and some beautiful cinematography as well. I didn't like how lighter the tone is for a story that talks about demons, witchcraft and legends. That part felt to me an out-of-place from the whole movie.
