It's a romantic-comedy film released by Netflix and stars Laura Marano and Noah Centineo. It's directed by Chris Nelson and is based on a novel titled "The Stand-In" written by Steve Bloom. The plot follows of a high school student Brooks Rattigan, played by Noah, who dreamed to be in the University of Yale and created an Uber-like app selling himself as a plus-one to any occasions and raise funds for it.

The story is quite good however the main theme about the movie has been rehashed multiple times from various rom-com films. That story in which the boy and the girl became friends who helped each other out in order to win each of their crushes then only to be end-up falling in-love with another. There are so many films that has been using that theme and it's becoming so cliché. I also find that the main characters didn't have any chemistry at all. There's no spark, no feeling of excitement at all. Both of them are good actors but they just don't sell as a loveteam. I think the only thing that I appreciated from this film other than having a cliché storyline is that the character story of Brooks. He's portrayed as this charming boy who is quite adaptable in changing his personality which he used that skill for the app that he created until he discovers that it's a double-edged sword for him. I like the redemption story of him as he slowly pushes away his closest loved ones by being that selfish, self-absorbed, liar who doesn't stop but to pretend he's somebody else. I like that part and it really adds another layer for it aside from being a romantic film.

OVERALL

THE PERFECT DATE is still a good film in terms of the character story of Brooks Rattigan but not so with the romantic element of it. I liked the characters in the film but the movie didn't sell for me as a romantic one. The actors involved lacks chemistry with one another and the love story of it is cliché.
