Arctic is a survival film directed by Joe Penna and stars Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Doctor Strange and Rouge One). It's a story of Mads Mikkelsen's character (for some unknown reason, the film didn't mention his name) who got stranded in an Arctic region. It's basically a versus story between a man and nature. The film starts with Mads' character doing his daily routine of catching some fish, turning on some device to track any on-going aircraft and making this big S.O.S sign by scrapping the ice floor. The movie directly showed us Mads (I'll just call his character Mads) already stranded on the Artic area so we never really get to know how long he was stranded and if there was any people besides him that were also got stranded. It's a slow-burn type of movie that quickly catches up its pacing towards the half-part of the film. The first minutes of it as I said we're quite slow since we've only seen Mads just doing his daily routine. It may feel repetitive at this point because the story seems to be stuck and didn't have any direction but it's the early minutes of the film, for sure there has to be something that they have cooked-up towards the film to spice it up.

As the movie goes along, there is a moment from the film in which Mads encountered another survivor when their helicopter got crashed. He took the survivor into his aircraft-turned-shelter and tended the survivor's wound. He found a map from the survivor and he found out that there is an area miles ahead from their current location which could definitely helped them. This is where the story gets to be interesting and the story has started to progressed. Due to this, Mads took the survivor with him and some supplies and tried to go to the said location to ask for help. This transitions the film into a sort of adventure-survival film. You will certainly feel the intensity of the film as Mads and the survivor trying to move from one location to another. Not only the place is unknown to them but also the place is filled with ice so they could die any moment because of Hypothermia alone. The movie will certainly put you at the edge of your seat because there are so many things happening to Mads while they are trying to get to the location. You could definitely feel that the place is taking a tool to their body with fingers starting to decay due to frostbite and scarcity of food. Mads Mikkelsen's performance was definitely a standout on this film. The movie only features Mads' character and the non-talking survivor so there's quite no dialogues spoken from the film. However, the film will certainly engage you as to how intense and emotional the movie is.

OVERALL

ARCTIC is an emotional and intense film from start to finish. You may feel some slowness at the start of it but its pacing quickly catches up on as soon as the story develops. The performances from the film was also good. There's less dialogue from the film but the story will certainly make you engage to it. The look of the film is also stunning. Though the movie sets in an area filled in ice so the only color that you're gonna get is white. However, the camera angle and the wide shots of the film were taken beautiful. I'm not some kind of a cinematographer or some sort but based on my standard as a movie fan, it's aesthetically beautiful to look at in the screen. I would definitely recommend this film. Don't expect that this film is a blockbuster type filled with eye-popping visual effects or extravagant storyline because it's not. However, if you want to see a good survival story that you want to be moved then you'd definitely want to watch this.
