REVIEW

It's a remake/reboot of the Child's Play franchise in which its first film released way back in 1988. Because of that film, that shit gave me nightmares for years after watching the original movie of it and before Annabelle the doll was even a thing, Chucky was the first doll who terrified the kids (us at that time). The original Child's Play has come a long way now spawning six sequels before this reboot has been released. The new movie is a different take from its original in which Chucky the doll is not serial killer who turned his soul into the Chuky doll. Instead, it is a different take to it adapting some of the modern elements that we have today which is the A.I (Artificial Intelligence) and portraying Chucky (which the movie called it "Buddi" doll) as a malfunctioning A.I who turned into a mindless killing machine.

I really dig this new reboot of the Child's Play franchise. Compared it with the original, it is way more bloody, way more graphic and just way creepier. The new design of the Chucky doll really cringes me so much of how the way it moves, the way it smiles and big his creepy blue/red eyes. I just don't understand why people from the movie are flocking in buying this seemingly high-tech A.I system with how creepy its design. From my first look of it, I would have seriously pass on the doll even how advanced its technology is. Unlike the original, it has this cuteness look that kind of lures you in while this new design outright provides a big warning already. There's a variation of tone from the whole movie. Some parts of it were really light and comedic during its first hour of it and as the movies goes on it is becoming much more intense and dark. There are some graphic and violence scenes in where Chucky starts his killing spree. It's rated R-16 for a reason and you really don't want your little kid to be exposed by those violent and bloody killing scenes. I also like some of the dramatic moments from Andy and his Mother played by Aubrey Plaza. There were certain moments that were really dramatic surrounding around Andy's character. He's aged up a bit from this one unlike the original and I really that change because it generated some of the key character moments from him. There are some good performances from the casts as well especially Mark Hamill voicing Chucky. He was not the original voice actor as this was previously voiced by Brad Dourif. However, he provided the child-like menacing tone from the original yet he also puts his own spin to it making it as his own work. Mark is also known voicing the iconic villain Joker from the Batman animated series and I do truly see some similarities between the two especially when Chucky laughs maniacally like Joker's laugh. The overall movie is pretty intense thanks to Chucky and to his artistic killing scenes. I like his new direction to that character. He may not have the same fun and sadistic personality that he had from the original given that this new Chucky is just an A.I but I can sense where this direction is headed to. I really am interested on how will they take this new Chucky character on its future sequels. Maybe have him slowly developed to acquire all the human traits into the future sequels and then from there we could truly see the very interesting character development from being this mindless machine killing A.I evolving into this more savage, fun and sadistic demonic killing machine with other acquired human traits.

OVERALL

I really had a great time watching this new reboot of Child's Play. It is grittier, darker, bloodier and more intense than the original. I liked its overall tone and the use of Artificial Intelligence as a medium in bringing Chucky to life. My only concern of this film is that Chucky's personality is limited due to him being an Artificial Intelligence unlike the original that he was an actual human character which provided more personalities and more fun to its character. Though I am still hoping that they will go into that route of Chucky slowly evolving his character to adapt some of the human traits in the future sequels of it. The performances were really great and its story and pacing was also good. I highly recommend this one for those who are fund of watching horror/slasher films and also to those who have watched the original Child's Play and its following sequels.
