It's a spy-thriller film directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Justin Haythe. The story is based from a novel titled "Red Sparrow" and the story tells about a Russian girl named "Dominika Egorova" who once was a famous ballerina who got recruited as one of the Russian Intelligent Officer after her career-ending injury. She sets of a mission to spy on the American CIA operative to know the mole working secretively against her country. The movie stars Jennifer Lawrence playing the Russian spy and Joel Edgerton as "Nate Nash" the CIA operative.

Jennifer Lawrence as the Red Sparrow

If there was going to be a Black Widow solo film (there is an upcoming development of that film) then this movie would be that. It's a spy-thriller film that is heavily involved with nudity so better not let your kids get a hold of this movie. Our main character Dominika has quite resemblances to the MCU character Black Widow. Watching some scenes from this film reminds me to the flashback scene of Black Widow during the Avengers: Age of Ultron when she got enchanted by Scarlet Witch and even their moniker has the same structure of it in which the first word is a color then the second word is about an animal. The movie talks about a secret organization being run by the Russian government who trains selected civilians to be a spy. They really emphasized on how these spies uses their body to lure the target to gather intelligence. Jennifer Lawrence was really good on this one. She was able to pull-off a performance that is quite sultry and yet at the same able to portray an emotional character that has a tragic backstory. She's a very talented actor no question about it. Aside from the heavy nudity of the film, it's also a violent film as well. Some scenes were really portrayed violently and also cringey at times cause you can hear those small detail such as the sounds of the bone's cracking. I like the story of our main character. I like her arc cause at first she was a very famous ballerina then when she got injured, her life got tragically turned into a very bad situation. The movie showed her dramatic transition turning herself into this spy. I watched the film really intrigued about the whole premise of it but as the movie goes along, I really didn't able to follow the story of it. The movie explores so much about its story and I kind-off got lost and got bored at half-point of it waiting for something big to happen. I just didn't really get the whole point of the movie or where the story was going to. Also, the movie has a very long running time which is also the reason why I was bored about the film. I think the movie lacks focus of its story and due to its involvement with multiple themes, you will get really lost at the middle of it.

OVERALL

RED SPARROW will certainly hook you about the premise of it and it's Jennifer Lawrence acting as the lead. It's a violent film with very graphic scenes involved and also some nudity in it. However, the film lacks focus to its story. You just don't know which direction the story was going to and it really feels that the movie is dragging at the half part of it. I praise the performances from Jennifer Lawrence. I like her character's arc and the conclusion of the film was a fulfilling ending. I wouldn't straight-up recommend this one because the story doesn't have any definitive direction and you might be bored watching it but if you have the knack of watching any ambiguous film then this might be good to you.
