Skyscraper is an action film starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Neve Campbell and Chin Han. This is directed and written by Rawson Marshall Thurber who also directed the hit comedy "We're the Millers" and the other The Rock film "Central Intelligence" with Kevin Hart. The story follows of an ex-NBI agent played by The Rock who must save his family from the fiery towering skyscraper called "The Pearl", built as the tallest building of the world after it has been being hijacked by a group of criminals.

The central plot of the movie resembles some similarities from the first Die Hard movie. That movie was sort of a staple of all action films because it was just an action-packed and thrilling movie that was elevated by the energetic performance of the lead and villain who were Bruce Willis and the great late Alan Rickman. The Rock has been sometimes labeled as the "busiest man in Hollywood" cause the guy just pops-up everywhere these days releasing so many films than an average A-list actor would. We have this new action movie of his called the Skyscraper and what I can tell about this movie is that it can never have the fun and wild spirit of "Die Hard". The visuals and effects were great. There were some scenes that were uneasy to watch especially for those who have a fear of heights. The action sequences were also great. It was rough and intense and really has some big impact on the whole movie. The lead characters really have some time as well. I also liked that they gave some action time for Neve Campbell's character playing as the wife of The Rock's character. It showed some versatility between the characters and not too much focus on the Rock. I didn't quite like the villain though. I just find him lackluster and didn't have enough character development. Which is also the reason why it can never be what Die Hard has done because Alan Rickman's villain character was the second lead of the movie even though he played as the villain of it. His character didn't have any charisma at all and he was just boring to watch. I also felt that they didn't explore enough of The Rock's character dilemma. They somehow set it up at the first scene of the movie and they never looked back at it until the end of the movie. I was hoping for them to really explore more of it throughout his journey of saving his family.

OVERALL

SKYSCRAPER is a movie with some good action sequences and an average story. This movie has a weak villain with a weak motivations. There were some money shots from the movie due to its good visual effects but it didn't help the movie. I did, however, enjoy the movie. It's not something that I can call a ground-breaking action film but rather a generic one. I'm still excited for his future works though cause The Rock is just awesome. Sadly though, I can't call this movie that.
