Sonic The Hedgehog is an action-adventure movie based on a video game franchise "Sonic the Hedgehog" published by SEGA. Sonic, our titular character is voiced by Ben Schwartz with James Marsden playing as Tom Wachowski, a country sheriff who helped aiding Sonic against its arch nemesis Dr. Robotnik played by the talented actor Jim Carrey.
The movie got heated by some of the most loyal fans of the Sonic franchise after its first trailer got released. They were all furious about the original looks of Sonic and because of those backlashes, it prompted the staff to redesign Sonic's look. I wasn't really a fan of Sonic though I've played the game of it, I wasn't really affected by the original look of it. However, when they did the redesign. It was definitely much better than the old looks. The new design that is much akin to the video game looks also helped the movie as it made Sonic a much more lovable character rather than the more humanize realistic look from the original trailer. The story of the movie was also really interesting and intriguing. It properly set-up the Sonic universe without shoving too much information from the original games that would certainly causes confusion to those casual audiences who are not accustomed to the video game. I was also surprised that the visual effects were really that great. I assumed that the movie will have low to average visual effects quality after draining its money to redesign Sonic's look but that final sequences at the end part of the movie was some eye-popping visuals I've seen for a while. Some sequences of the movie really reminded me of those other superhero movies as well. I won't get much into details about it but for those casual movie goers, it reminded me of Doctor Strange plus X-men Days of Future Past. You will know it once you've seen those sequences from the movie. I also like the adventure aspect of it with Sonic and Tom. Some of it were really fun and I really like the buddy relationship between the two. What's also entertaining about the movie is Jim Carrey's performance as the bad villain. He does some over-the-top characters with other movies with his usual facial antics but this one, he was definitely menacing yet funny. His role in this movie reminded me of that Lemony Snickets movie where he played a different villain as Count Olaf. By far, it is my favorite Jim Carrey performances of all as not only he played a very convincing cold and asshole character but he was also damn funny. Just like that character, he really nailed this one by playing an intelligent and threatening villain while also providing some of the funniest performances from the movie.
OVERALL
If you want to have a good time in the cinema, this movie is a definitely go-to one. It got some amazing visuals, good storyline, charistmatic villain, and some of the entertaining scenes. I am now invested to this universe and the movie definitely made me a fan to the Sonic franchise. Looking forward to its sequel and I do hope that it will retain its quality in providing us some fun and entertaining movie just like this one.
