The First Purge is an American horror film that depicts the origin of the first annual "Purge". This is directed by Gerard McMurray which starred Y'lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, and Joivan Wade and is produced by Blumhouse Productions which also produced other horror films such as "Get Out", "Upgrade" and "Split". There's nothing to differentiate between this movie and the other 3 Purge movies that have been released. Just the same concept of people killing each other just to "Purge" without breaking any laws and a group of innocent and good people trying to survive the 12-hour event. We get to see in this movie of how this annual event was born. I was hoping for a deeper root of it and what the movie gave me was an underwhelming explanation. It's a nice idea of expanding the Purge universe by mixing it with politics and social issue but I was more into the smaller scale of it and more leaning into personal stories about a group of a family trying to survive the Purge. You could say that I kinda liked the premise of the first Purge movie rather than the sequels or this prequel. The lead of this film had some interesting character development which surprisingly I kinda liked it. It was a nice touch and something that I appreciated. Same events and same scenes that I could see from this movie and from other Purge movies. If you could show me any scene from all of the Purge movies, I would have a hard time to identify which movie was it. Basically, it's just the same shit all over again. Then again, I think we really need to have this movie just to know how this annual "Purge" event came up at the first place and I really think they should stop making any Purge sequels from now on because I just had enough of it. Unless if they can think something that can make this movie different from the others, then please be my guest.

OVERALL

THE FIRST PURGE already feels like a repetitive gimmick at this point. I didn't like the story of how the first Purge came up. It was a bit underwhelming and I think they have already laid the background of it from the previous Purge movies. It has some interesting character development which is something that you could appreciate but it didn't elevate and saved this movie from being a mediocre one.
