The Nun is a supernatural horror film, a spin-off film that tells the story of the infamous demon "Valak" whom we saw from the sequel of the "The Conjuring" movie. Much like Annabelle, we get to see the story of "Valak" and how this demon character relates to the entire "Conjuring Universe". This is directed by Corin Hordy and stars Taissa Farmiga as "Sister Irene" who is the real-life sister of Vera Farmiga who also played Lorraine Warren from the 2 Conjuring Movies, Demián Bichir as "Father Burke" and Jonas Bloquet as a "Local Frenchie". The story sets in 1952 in Romania, in which an old Monastery is being attacked by an unknown presence whom we already know as "Valak". Sister Irene and Father Burke sets off to Romania and investigate the killings of the Nun. Valak was essentially the most famous/iconic character of the second Conjuring movie. That character was just damn creepy and its character design is simply unique and it slightly changed my perception whenever I see any Nuns after watching that movie. I think the reason why Valak was well received by the people was that of the mysteriousness of its character. Its appearance alone contains already a potentially good storyline and that's why we immediately received news shortly after the second Conjuring release that a spin-off film title "The Nun" was already in place. Visually speaking, this movie is beautiful to watch. It is beautiful yet at the same time creepy that really sets the tone of what we are going to see for the entirety of the movie. The casts did have some strong performances that hold up until the end. There were a couple of funny scenes that I also enjoyed. However, I find the story of Valak a bit of a lacking. I would have enjoyed the movie more if they only dig deeper into Valak's origin but instead, we get some long scenes with cheap jump scares that weren't really necessary. People want to see this film because of Valak. I admit that personally, I don't like horror films but the character "Valak" just intrigues me so much that after watching it from the second Conjuring film, I would want to know more of it. You don't really necessarily need to have every single scene with jump scares. Look at the other horror films like "Get Out" or "A Quiet Place" or even the 2nd Conjuring movie. Those are very good horror movies that just don't rely on jump scares but instead contains a very rich storyline.

OVERALL

THE NUN movie was a missed opportunity. They could have focused more on the storyline or background of "Valak" and instead, we get to see so many long scenes that were just repeatable and just doesn't really add up to the storyline of this movie. I personally think that this could have been good or even greater given a bit of a push by the creators behind it and add more content to it and I do hope that they will address that on the next sequel.
