Horror movies that deals with possession and demonic figures scared the shit out of me that’s why I normally skip these kinds of movies. The Possession of Hannah Grace is a new horror film produced by the Screen Gems company and is directed by a Dutch director named Diederik Van Rooijen. What makes this movie so special personally to me is that the main female lead of this film is a Half-Filipina named Shay Mitchell whom you might recognize her name from the TV series called “Pretty Little Liars”. I’ve never seen that TV series yet but it’s a great thing to know that there are our “Kababayans” out there who had such huge break into the filming industry especially in a Hollywood movie playing as a lead role. Let’s go back about the quality of the film. This movie has the potential of being that terrifying and horrifying film if only the source material was just properly executed. I really liked the first half of the film. It was just so terrifying considering the place is set in a morgue and at the same time intriguing to know what had happened before the possession. However, as the film goes through the second half. This is where it really went down for me. The genre was becoming a fantasy slowly as they focused more on the power side of the demons and the horror part of it kinda fades at the end. They didn’t divulge more into why was Hannah Grace was chosen as the recipient of the unidentified demon. The reasons that they have revealed didn’t really make any sense and considering that there are a quite a lot of people who are experiencing the same disorder as what Hannah Grace have, they should have explained more of it why she was chosen. They didn’t even explain who this demon is possessing Hannah Grace and what were its motivations of controlling the body of Hannah Grace. I didn’t also like the ending of the film as it doesn’t just fit the entire movie. There were also some clunky edits throughout the film and the characters were so one dimensional that their deaths didn’t give any impact to me. Shay Mitchell though is indeed a performer and I’m hoping to see more of her in future films. Unfortunately, this movie wasn’t really her big break but it is a stepping stone for her.

OVERALL
THE POSSESSION OF HANNAH GRACE is a film with a good source material only to be executed poorly with bad edits, lack of storyline and one-sided characters. Shay Mitchell was definitely the only crown glory of this film and this could have been lower of my ratings if she provided bad performances from this film. The first half of the film was really scary but then it subsides once the film went to a very different route in terms of its tone. This is not a good horror film but it’s not one of the worst I have seen as well. This would have been a good or even a great movie but when the movie is starting to drag you down at the bottom of its pit, there’s no going back to its top and this is the case of “The Possession of Hannah Grace”.
