Apostle is a horror-thriller film written and directed by Gareth Evans, the man behind the two Raid movies. It stars Dan Stevens, Michael Sheen and Lucy Boynton which follows a story about a girl who got taken by a Cult into a remote island and his brother Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) tries to rescue her sister by infiltrating the Cult and discovers some shocking revelations along the way.
When you think of a Horror genre, you would instantly think of scary monsters and demonic ghosts. It's not usually the case for this movie. This movie might not haunt you in your dreams but it does have some scary and disturbing messages rooted deep within it. There are scenes which were really graphic and disturbing especially those rituals presented during the film. The first half of the movie doesn't do too much. It doesn't reveal anything about the cult other than they have kidnapped the sister of the leading man of this movie for money which have been established at the opening scene. This is a 2-hour movie and you would have to wait for an hour to get the meaty part of it. Although there were hints and small set pieces provided on the first half of it just to give you some sort of a hint and idea of what is going to happen but still, you will really feel that the movie seems to be dragging due to its slow build-up. However, this doesn't take away anything from this movie as this movie has some creepy and dark tone which reminded me of Hereditary because of the Cult involvement and has a very interesting main storyline. The story of this movie is something that I wasn't really expecting. It really caught me off guard and a part of me thinks that it was a nice touch and another part of me thinks that it was just a creepy weird storyline in a good way. The acting from this movie was really done well. All the major characters were fleshed-out in terms of their own story and character background. Like I said before, the first half of this is all about building up the story of introducing some key characters and I just liked how they really fit well as the movie goes on.

OVERALL
APOSTLE is not your typical horror film. It's lesser scary than Hereditary but does have some interesting storyline to it. This movie is violent and graphic. It does contain some pretty disturbing and gruesome scenes. I kinda liked how they blend fantasy and horror into it. Really added some diversity of the movie. It is still a good horror movie that provides a different kind of scare which you have to watch and know the whole storyline of it.
