This is a war-drama film retelling the story of Winston Churchill after him being appointed as the new Prime Minister and to fight the Nazi led by Hitler who is threatening to defeat United Kingdom. It stars Gary Oldman as the Prime Minister and directed by Joe Wright who previously directed “Pan”. Both Dunkirk (another film released on the same year directed by Christopher Nolan) and this one kinda has a similarities on its plot since they are tackling the same event. Dunkirk plot focuses more on the soldiers and their evacuation story, this film however focuses on the political side of it. It’s a heavy drama film anchored by one of my favorite actors of all time Gary Oldman. He’s been exceptionally good through-out in his entire career and is indeed one of the finest actor to ever appeared in the cinema. The way he plays his character in this film was without a doubt the gem of this movie. It was so beautifully acted by him, his aura on the film and his gravita really cements this film as one of the best movie of the year. The make-up done on his character was so good and I would not have known him playing the character if I were to watch this film without any background on the actors involved on it. It was just so well done. It’s a war drama film but there were really no wars happened on the screen. Albeit there was one scene but it was just so quick that you can hardly identify it as a war scene. This movie focuses more on the political side of it and tells a really deep dilemma of him if he is going to surrender and admit to the terms of his enemies, or will he going to courage up and continue the fight.
