Roma is a Netflix black and white drama film written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. The story sets in the year of 1970 and 1971 at the district of "Roma" in Mexico in which it focuses on the story of a young housekeeper lady residing to a middle-class family. The film stars Yalitza Aparicio playing as Cleo the housekeeper of the family along with other Mexican actors such as Marina de Tavira, Fernando Grediaga and Jorge Antonio Guerrero.

Frankly speaking, I've never liked watching films that are set in black and white format. It just feels so pale, lifeless, boring and I've never really been used watching any film that doesn't have any color. However, this film "Roma" has been nominated for ten categories at the Oscar 2019 so I really have to check this one out. I have to say, this film is indeed beautiful. It's not the kind of film that I would put on my top favorite films of the year but this film is really something. It's a poetic film that tells a touching story about the ups and downs of the housekeeper and of the employer's life. I feel that there's a bit slowness with regards to its pacing but when it tries to hit you in the feels, this film really hits you right in the feels. The performances of the actors were amazing as well. Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira truly deserved that Oscar nominations. Both of them played it so naturally yet provided a very impactful performance that you could feel all their emotions flowing from them. This film doesn't have any big plot. It just has a straightforward story between this housekeeper and her employer. Both of them have their own struggles that they try to cope up and it was just so hopeful seeing them still managed to celebrate life. It's a story that will definitely resonate to all of the people. One important thing to note is how beautifully this film was shot. It really feels like I'm watching some sort of a painting that slowly comes to life. I like the gentle and slow movement of the camera from left to right and vice versa. It's a fitting technique to use on this kind of film as it adds some poetry in it. This way also, you could definitely see clearly the whole background of it and all the happenings around it.

OVERALL

ROMA is a very touching and moving film that talks about hardship, friendship, family struggles and happiness in life. It's a film that is so personal to the director and it's a film that I truly admire for what it is. This film was beautifully shot and I didn't really mind that it is in a black and white theme as it truly really fits the story of it. The actors were simply amazing. They've done their job really well. It's one of the better and beautiful films in 2018 and it's a film that you should definitely check out.
