The Favourite is a historical periodical black comedy-drama film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Nicholas Hoult. It tells of a story about Abigail Masham (Emma Stone), a once servant turned to Lady and is a first cousin to the Duchess of Marlborough, Sarah (Rachel Weisz) who was working to the Queen of Great Britain, Anne (Olivia Colman). The two of them became rivals with one another who are seeking as to be “the favourite” of the Queen. There were plenty of themes that this film had covered. I won't be expounding those themes but generally those kinds that are not quite favorable at today's society such as corruption, rape and other taboo subjects. This kind of movie is not usually my cup of tea but there is a story from here that I was really intrigued. Well, the first few minutes of it wasn’t that engaging to me. It took too long for me to get really focused on the movie. I was only then intrigued by the growing rivalry between Abigail and Sarah. I like how they set-up these two characters carefully without seeing them forcefully developed. It really was natural and the director of this film certainly did a great job directing that part. The performances in this film were really great. Emma was good playing the cunning and calculative Sarah and Rachel was also good playing the truthful and cold Sarah. Now, these two certainly did an amazing job for their parts but the outstanding one was Olivia's character as the childlike and sickly Anne, the Queen. She plays her so playful with full of energy and also with so much heart that could make you feel with her. I'm not a historian or any kind so I wouldn't talk about the historical accuracies from the film but based on just what I saw, it has a very intriguing story that certainly hooked me in. The scores were great, the cinematography was stunning and the direction of the movie was top-notched. However though, as I said, this kind of film is not really for me. Though I have enjoyed some periodical films for the pure enjoyment of it but it just so happens that this one though some parts were really funny, isn't just really my taste. I do appreciate the technicalities coming of this film.

OVERALL

THE FAVOURITE is a good film with amazing performances from the casts, good scores, and stunning cinematography. The costumes were also great along with the make-up. It has an intriguing story that talks about some sensitive subject matter taken into a lighter way. It's not a movie that I would really recommend to anyone as this will be very divisive depending on your taste but go ahead, it's a movie worthy to watch.
