The Vanishing (aka Keepers) is a psychological thriller film directed by Kristoffer Nyholm and stars Gerald Butler (300, How To Train Your Dragon), Peter Mullan and Connor Swindells (Sex Education). The film follows of a three lighthouse keepers played by those guys located in a remote island of Flannan Isles. The movie is slow-burn type of a kind. Throughout the whole movie, we only get to see these three men trying to survive the lonely island and maintained the lighthouse. The pacing is slow but as I said, it’s that type of a movie that first slowly builds up the tension. It’s also a psycho thriller that is suspense and thrilling. I like the movie for what it is because it talks about character study. All of these characters really has their own arc and they have a huge development throughout the film. All the guys involved on this film were really good. Their performances were chilling and downright phenomenal. It really made the movie so dark and gritty because of their grounded performances playing as human as they can be. I was quite surprised that Gerald Butler still has that acting gravitas that I saw from him in the movie 300. His recent movies might not be good in terms of its quality but this one was really a stepping stone for him to comeback from that limelight. I do think that he’s a good actor and this movie really solidifies him that. The movie is really dark and it’s a haunting tale and a sad truth of what a human mind condition can do. The film really explores on that with these characters. It’s also a tragic tale to say at least. I was shocked about how the story developed into and I wasn’t expecting for this movie to be really that good.

OVERALL
THE VANISHING is a good thriller movie filled with human emotions, suspense and thrills. The performances of the actors were phenomenal especially mentioning Gerald Butler. I like the story of it and I was totally hooked about it. The movie might not be for everyone’s taste because it’s one of those movies that is a slow-burn type in which every minute of it slowly builds up the heat and tension of the film, but if you don’t mind those kinds of movies, then you’re gonna love this one.
